I Knew Once

I Knew Once

I knew once,
the magic of childhood.
To see the world as my playground.
To soar on eagle’s wings to places found
only in my dreams.

I knew once,
the joy of love’s first kiss.
To taste lips sweeter than honey.
To feel the warmth of another’s arms

I knew once,
the pressure of manhood.
To love my son, in spite myself.
To do what is best for others before
I take pleasure for myself

I knew once,
the pain of life
To live for years with no one to love
To try in vain to return
to where the magic still lives.

I knew once,
what it was like to be a man.
